St Peter's Cathedral

The tall cathedral church of St. Peter presents itself strikingly from the west: the two unequal towers have become the landmark of the diocese and invite visitors to enter the cathedral through the main portal built around 1530. In simple harmony and artistic restraint, the late Romanesque architecture from the 13th century, the late medieval sculptures and altars and the neo-Romanesque innovations of the early 20th century form a harmonious and calm picture, at the center of which is the impressive Romanesque triumphal cross and the former high altar, reminiscent of a reliquary. The bronze baptismal font from around 1225 deserves special attention, while the cloister to the south of the cathedral with the canons' cemetery forms an oasis of calm in the middle of the bustling city.
