The Moonlight Shopping event took place on 28 October 2023. Laser shows, walking acts, musicals, magic and fire shows entertained visitors until 10 pm. Car parking and public transport were once again available free of charge.
With the REACT EU immediate action programme "City Centre Perspective", the state of Lower Saxony supported 207 municipalities and municipal associations in Lower Saxony with a total of around 120 million euros from the EU recovery aid REACT EU, as part of the Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding was to be provided for projects and concepts that would help to future-proof city centres, enable new uses and qualities of stay and promote digitalisation and climate protection. The city of Osnabrück received 1.8 million euros from this funding programme. The "Moonlightshopping" 2022 project had a share of 50,000 euros.
2022: Marketing Osnabrück GmbH would like to unite the various players in the city centre, such as retailers, restaurants and service providers, with a city event under the motto "Moonlightshopping" on 29.10.2022 and contribute to the revitalisation of the city centre. An attractive and atmospheric supporting programme will turn a stroll through Osnabrück's city centre on this day into an experience with live acts, street artists and DJs. The shopping streets will become "little stages", inviting people to linger and join in. The city will once again be recognised as an "experience and meeting place" and invite people to shop in Osnabrück. As an incentive, opening hours will be offered until 22:00, accompanied by a programme of events in the city centre to make Saturday a special shopping day. The focus will also be on the "mixed use" of a lively city centre, as the event will not only focus on retail, but also on gastronomy. The attractive presentation of the city of Osnabrück should leave a lasting impression on visitors, encouraging them to visit the city of Osnabrück again after the event has ended and thus strengthening the city centre as a business location.
