Festival of Lower Saxony

The "Day of Lower Saxony" - a celebration for the state, its inhabitants and guests. Every two years, a weekend is dedicated to volunteering, the culture, history and diversity of the state. The result is a meeting place where traditions and customs are revived, and at the same time opportunities for the future can be experienced.

In order to consolidate the cultural identity of the federal state and provide information about the regions, the citizens' festival was launched in 1981 by the then Minister for Federal and European Affairs, Wilfried Hasselmann. To this day, the state festival has developed into a permanent cultural fixture with supra-regional visibility that has become indispensable in Lower Saxony. For the state government, the Day of Lower Saxony is the epitome of cheerful and lively togetherness in the state-wide cultural and club scene. This is why the state supports clubs, associations and also the organising municipality in the planning and implementation work in the form of a financial contribution to project funding.

The Day of Lower Saxony owes its long-standing success story to the tireless efforts of volunteers. For decades, clubs, associations and radio and television media have been committed to making the diversity of the state accessible to a wide audience. Each organising city adds its own personal regional touch to the celebrations.

Locals and guests from near and far can expect a colourful supporting programme. Hundreds of exhibitors from Lower Saxony provide information about their voluntary work on various themed trails and invite young and old to take part in a variety of hands-on activities. The programme stages attract visitors until late in the evening with a colourful mix of music, dance and sporting performances. On Sunday, traditional and club groups parade through the festival area as a "parade of diversity" and bring the state festival to a fitting close.

The 38th Day of Lower Saxony will be held in the City of Peace Osnabrück from 29 to 31 August 2025. The 39th Day of Lower Saxony will be hosted by the Lion City of Braunschweig on the weekend of 12 to 14 June 2026.
