For the Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa, music is "the place where notes and silence meet". His compositional process is linked to Zen Buddhism and its symbolic interpretation of nature, which can also be felt in his work Voice from the Ocean. Tan Dun's Water Concerto is sonically and visually mesmerizing. The Chinese composer uses water as a real instrument, which is brought to life by the soloist using spectacular techniques. Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his Symphony No. 5 during the Second World War. With this work, he enters a spiritual dimension and at the same time creates an impressive appeal for peace. A few years earlier, he had already shown the world his pacifist spirit with Dona nobis pacem (Give us peace).
