The Ständebrunnen was created in 1981 by the Aachen sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg and stands in front of St. Johann Church in the direction of Johannisstraße. It consists of six bronze figures representing the estates (clergy, knights and burghers) of the Middle Ages. The figures are placed on the edge of a triangular, rounded bronze basin. They have movable stainless steel joints on their feet, knees, hips, elbows, hands and heads, which makes it possible to drape them like dolls. Only the then prince-bishop is enthroned in his own place. A stele rises up in the centre of the fountain, from whose uppermost plate the water runs down over two more. From there, it flows into the basin via three snail-shaped channels pointing into each corner. The total height of the fountain is around 2.80 metres.

The figures, all modelled on people in the 17th century, were designed by Marga Sommerkamp. The choice of this era was deliberate, as it symbolises eventful hundred years in which significant events such as the great city fire of 1613 or the conclusion of the peace negotiations of the Thirty Years' War in 1648 took place.
