The Ossenbrüggen fountain, built in 1983 by the Osnabrück ceramist Rolf Overberg, is located on Adolf-Reichwein-Platz. The structure of the fountain consists of a three metre high square stone stele. At its upper end, four ox figures cross a bridge of round arches, which gave the fountain its name, as they form a kind of ox bridge (old German: Ossenbrügge).
The column stands in the centre of a round paved basin, which is curved like the brim of a hat. The water flows out of the column below the bridge and down its sides.
The fountain is fed by an underground spring that naturally fills a cistern. This cistern is located beneath the fountain.
The fountain alludes to an old legend, according to which the city name of Osnabrück is derived from the word "Ossenbrügge", meaning "ox bridge over the Hase".
