The cultural night

Stroll & enjoy

The Culture Night has been taking place in Osnabrück's Old Town since 2001. Every year in late summer, numerous participants take part in the diverse programme that invites visitors to look, listen and join in between the theatre, art gallery, cathedral and museum quarter. The highlight on the market square is framed by street culture, the free offers of the Culture Night extend into Hasestraße, shops and restaurants participate with their own activities.

The Culture Night also spreads to places outside the historic city centre, where concerts and readings can be heard and exhibitions can be seen. Artists, museums, cultural centres, churches, theatres, initiatives and associations show the wide range of Osnabrück's cultural scene with numerous programmes at over 50 locations.

Culture night pauses in 2025

In favour of the Day of Lower Saxony

This year, the cultural night will be suspended once in favour of the state festival "Tag der Niedersachsen", as decided by the Osnabrück council. This is because the two major events could not be held in parallel or in quick succession in the city centre.

"The Culture Night is an important presentation opportunity for both the independent art scene and the municipal cultural programme. In the long term, Culture Night will remain a permanent fixture in the events calendar. We are looking forward to next year's edition," says Patricia Mersinger, head of the city's culture department.

The Day of Lower Saxony has been organised by the state of Lower Saxony in different cities since 1981 and will be coming to Osnabrück for the first time in 2025. The cultural state festival focuses on voluntary work in Lower Saxony. Accordingly, actors from all over the state and far beyond the cultural sector will present themselves in Osnabrück city centre. Several hundred thousand visitors are expected over the weekend from 29 to 31 August.

The individual theme miles and stages are coordinated by various state institutions that make up the programme advisory board. These include the Ministry of the Interior and Sport, the Lower Saxony State Sports Association, the Lower Saxony State Costume Association, the State Association for Cultural Youth Education, the State Music Council, the Lower Saxony Youth Fire Brigade, the Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony and the major radio stations in Lower Saxony.

The programme planning for the Osnabrück Mile, the Osnabrück Stage and the stage at Theater Beach will be handled by Marketing Osnabrück GmbH, which is organising the Day of Lower Saxony for the city. The Theatre Beach in particular will provide a platform for regional artists and cultural professionals during the day.

"We are delighted about the numerous applications for the programme at the Day of Lower Saxony. The application phase is now closed. The programme advisory board will decide which applicants will be accepted," explains Alexander Illenseer, Managing Director of Marketing Osnabrück GmbH.
