"Let justice be done, and let the world perish!" says Kohlhaas. Balancing on the border between medieval constitutional thinking and the legal concepts of the absolutist state, Kleist's Kohlhaas from 1808 is a tour-de-force of rigorous bourgeois morality, in which a merchant inspired by vigilante justice takes justice into his own hands and sets fire to the Saxon lands. This exaggeration of Kohlhaas drives the injustice right across 21st century Europe, where the welfare state is crumbling, the democratic system, which is sinking further to the right, is being eroded, and tractors and young generations are blocking the roads. The revolt of the future is questioned: if the world is coming to an end, which justice is the right one?
