The Sunday walks in the Botanical Garden only take place on the first Sunday of each month at 11:00 a.m. during the winter season - every Sunday during the summer season (except public holidays).

The Botanical Garden

This year, the Botanical Garden of Osnabrück University is celebrating its 40th anniversary at the same time as the 50th anniversary of Osnabrück University.
You can therefore expect a very diverse and varied program this year in the Botanical Garden and at other locations at the university and in the city of Osnabrück.

The Botanical Garden was built from a vision in 1984 in an extraordinary setting, in the middle of a former quarry with visible traces of its past and insights into the history of the earth.

A special highlight is the rainforest house: it stands out strikingly from the edge of a quarry and enchants with its unique vegetation from the Amazon basin. The diversity of plant communities from different regions of the world is on display in the first quarry. In 2011, the garden was connected to a second quarry by a tunnel, in which native, specially protected plants and animals have reclaimed this inner-city habitat.

Researching biodiversity preserving communicating

As a university garden, it has been an indispensable resource for research and teaching for 40 years. Biodiversity research focuses on two main areas: the evolution of land plants with their adaptation strategies to variable environmental conditions and the relationships of the alliaceae (Alliaceae).

Another concern is the conservation of native biodiversity, as a partner in the national network for the protection of endangered wild plants (WIPs-De) and through several gene banks in the garden. Education for sustainable development is provided by the Green School, which offers both guided tours and hands-on activity programs.
