Marco: "I saw Fliehende Stürme for the first time at the end of 2008 in Vienna, as support for Dritte Wahl. That was in the Arena, it was my first time there, and I watched Fliehende Stürme in full before the headliner and was enchanted by the darkness that the gentlemen, who were a bit older at the time, celebrated. Then, two or three years later, I picked up the record Die Tiere Schweigen from Bibi at the old Shock Records. You can't listen to this German-language junk, that's how they were advertised to me. So, super nice dark lines á la Never write down the dreams you had, it's better to forget etc... Top, thrilled. And then later I met Huba, the "new" bass player, by chance in Tenerife, best wishes to him. So now they're here again, and I'm very happy, and I hope you're happy with me. And as the icing on the cake, MT Bags are also opening. Well? Well?"

FLIEHENDE STÜRME
Depro Punk/Dark Wave
If your own band name keeps popping up as a reference in other band biographies to provide clues, but you don't "sound like" yourself, then you've created your own sound that others would like to achieve. Fliehende Stürme only appear in connection with other band names, because no other band currently sounds like them, and even a cover band would find it difficult to recreate this sound from its individual components in an even remotely identical way after the transformation that took place from CHAOS Z to FLIEHENDE STÜRME sometime in the early 80s.

For many, Chaos Z were one of the first German hardcore bands and for even more, a cult punk band with an uncompromising sound that counted bands such as Joy Division predecessor Warsaw, The Wall and the Pack among its influences alongside Discharge. The change of band name was a logical step towards opening up to other styles such as new wave, post-punk, early gothic and the use of keyboards in order to create a sound cosmos of their own, in which Andreas Löhr, the only original survivor, has been running his lonely circles as Fliehende Stürme ever since. In the first few years with a changing line-up, then with a band that has remained stable since 2010 with Andreas Löhr, Jens Halbauer and Uwe Hubatschek.

The ingredients are no secret: German lyrics, although it would certainly sound weightier in English, an idiosyncratic and unmistakable guitar playing, unmistakable vocals, drums that are more than just a rhythm generator, purposefully used synthesizer sounds and a bass that also has a life of its own. Everything bears a clear signature, is superficially unagitated, but despite all the melancholy always raw, aggressive and never stands still musically, even after such a long time with constantly small steps.

Melancholy and hopelessness, on a small and large scale, why hang your head when there is no escape anyway? Shadows, darkness, chaos, confronted with our heads held high instead of hanging our shoulders and sinking into self-pity, that was, that is and that remains punk, because where others have long since given up, we dance on. Yes, hopelessness and failure can be so beautiful.
To answer the question, when did you "manage" as a band to create your own danceable sound and cosmos? When your LP lands on the turntable, one half nods and sprints onto the dance floor, while the rest just keeps dancing, then goes to the DJ to ask what was playing.

Today, the term post-punk is often used because everything is "post" at some point, but if that applies to Fliehende Stürme, then in the spirit of the very early 80s, when post-punk was allowed to be anything but one-dimensional.

With their unmistakable sound cosmos and clear lyrics that always remain tangible and never seem trite, Fliehende Stürme have gained a devoted fan base over the years that works across scenes and, on closer inspection, appeals to a "colorful" audience - after all, there are many shades of black.
