In "Um uns die Toten", bestselling author Bartholomäus Grill tells the story of his life's journey with death. The world of experience begins in arch-Catholic Bavaria, where death seems omnipresent and fascinating. As a foreign correspondent, he encounters death as a mass murderer in the form of wars, epidemics and natural disasters. In contrast to this are the farewells to his loved ones: the sad death of his little sister, who dies shortly after birth, the lonely death of his father, the merciless death of his mother.
At the center of the book is Grill's award-winning reportage about his terminally ill brother's last trip to Zurich to visit the death assistants. There is a right to live and a right to die, writes the author. Although he supported his brother's move, he warns against abuse: assisted suicide should only be liberalized under strict conditions.
