Reading and discussion
When the First World War began, they were at the height of their careers and among the most renowned German authors: the brothers Heinrich Mann and Thomas Mann. The younger Thomas had perfected the art of the 19th century European novel with Buddenbrooks, while the older Heinrich was regarded as a master of political satire and the forefather of Expressionism. The brothers had much in common and were similar in many ways. Only politically were they distant from each other: Thomas Mann as a defender of the German Empire, Heinrich Mann as its staunch critic. Heinrich Mann formulated his criticism in the famous Zola essay, while Thomas Mann spent four years writing his response in the Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen. It is essentially a polemic against his brother, who is attacked in it as a "civilized man of letters".
Shortly before his death, the well-known author and journalist Hanjo Kesting was able to reconstruct the bitter fraternal dispute from letters and other documents and compile it into a text collage that has lost none of its exemplary significance even after more than a hundred years. Read by Ulrich Noethen (Heinrich Mann) and Frank Arnold (Thomas Mann).
Hanjo Kesting studied philosophy, literature and history in Cologne, Tübingen and Hamburg. 1973-2006 Head of the main editorial department for the cultural word at Norddeutscher Rundfunk.
