Driven by a vision, a longing for the "distant sound", the composer Fritz sets off into the world and leaves the love of his life, Grete, to do so. Grete wants to follow him, flees her brutalized, petty bourgeois family, but ends up on the wrong track. Only at the end of their lives do Grete and Fritz find each other - old and disillusioned. Fritz realizes too late that he can only find the distant sound with her and dies.

Franz Schreker's opulent opera, which was one of the most frequently performed operas at the beginning of the 20th century, combines artistic drama and the story of emancipation. In addition to the actors, there is another main character: the sound. Schreker's musical language ranges from lush to gloriously roaring and is entirely in keeping with the indulgent attitude to life of the time.
