Cooperation: Colloquium Third World - Environment and Development
Since Fukuyama and Huntington, "the West" has vacillated between the belief in a monopolistic world ("end of history") and the frustration generated by the refusal to subordinate itself to the value patterns of the USA without any alternative ("clash of cultures"). In this situation, in which the West - if it exists at all - overestimates itself on the one hand and proves to be incapable of communication and compromise on the other, China is proving to be a pragmatic alternative for many countries in the global South. How can development be initiated without drastically interfering with existing power and value structures? The constant expansion of the "belt and road initiative" and the Chinese foreign investments that go hand in hand with it have not only caused China a number of problems, but above all have also given it growing international influence.
The lecture examines the key points of China's development and thus also shows in mirror image where Europe (and thus also Germany) would have to rethink its own positions in order to become more attractive again as a cooperation partner.
