In "The Scent of Pines", the Berlin author delves into her childhood and comes across repression and lies. What did her grandfather Heinrich, allegedly stationed in Riga as an accountant in the Wehrmacht, know about the Nazi atrocities? Was he perhaps involved himself? The question of her family's complicity soon arises. She learns that they lived in a house that was formerly inhabited by Jewish citizens. Did the family benefit from the expulsion or were they even responsible for it? Bianca Schaalburg researches the events and poses the question of the guilt and responsibility of a normal German family.
