Curiosity and a thirst for adventure
driven me as a 20-year-old to explore
the wide world. With
7 students and two post
parcel vans, I traveled overland via Afghanistan
to India and Nepal
in 1971. We were very naïve and reckless back then. What happened to
others, we could never have expected help in
times without smartphones. We were
infinitely lucky.
In hindsight, you also
have to ask some critical questions about this
kind of travel.
We felt great, the
world was at our feet, we didn't reflect on
things. Ultimately, it was
the trip of a lifetime. The
experiences with people in
completely different realities of life,
in other cultures, have
shaped me: in tolerance as well
as in reflection on my own
society
