Wippsteert are the musical Low German crash course for your ears! With folk rock "up Platt" and a good dose of pub charm, the six musicians from the
Osnabrück region turn High German into a foreign language. Where mandolin, accordion,
sports guitar and tacking banjo join Low German provincial wisdom, singing along at the edge of the stage becomes a must. Wippsteert are a rock band with a folk touch and bar poets with a penchant for pop. They are storytellers who bring their
unmistakable mix of styles to the stage with a wink, but also with great emotion, captivating not only native speakers of Low German.
Somehow "folky" it should be, that much is certain for singer and frontman Marcus "Bruni" Bruns
when the band came together in the tranquil town of Alfhausen in 2014. However, the first album released a year later by the then five band members shows that this categorization alone does not do justice to the Wippsteert sound. "Folkplattcore" is
only the name of a newly created genre and also the title of the album, which was
produced by the band themselves. Neither German nor English can be heard on it.
Instead, the band dedicates itself to the language that has always been spoken in the Lower Saxony province and which singer Bruni in particular lives by: Platt! The name of the band:
Wippsteert - Low German for wagtail. Restless and bustling, always on the move.
The band's efforts to maintain and preserve the Low German language are not the least of the reasons why they have received funding and awards. After numerous concerts in northern Germany and guest appearances on the radio, the second album "An un' för sück" was released in 2020 in collaboration with the Osnabrück label Timezone Records. A consistent further development between Low German ballad, country folk and rock board. Wippsteert are accompanied by producer Matthias Lohmöller from the Docmaklang studio in Osnabrück. It is the musical basis for the band's third album "Flügge", which will be released in 2023.
Wippsteert are:
● Marcus Bruns (vocals, guitar, blues harp)
● Tobias Büscherhoff (guitar, banjo, vocals)
● David Hausfeld (bass, trumpet)
● Dieter Ostendorf (piano, organ, accordion)
● Andre Stuckenberg (vocals, guitar, mandolin)
● Gerrit Achilles (drums)
Flügge
The bird learns to fly, the Wippsteert becomes "Flügge". On their third
album of the same name, the six Low German folk rockers from the Osnabrücker Land
are more versatile and self-confident than ever. Together with producer Matthias Lohmöller from the Docmaklang studio in Osnabrück and the Bremen label Fuego, Wippsteert have once again broken down musical barriers without losing sight of the essentials: Folk rock "up Platt" that entertains, but also moves.
Already in the opener "Miegklämmken", mandolin and accordion lay the folk foundation,
on which the Wippsteert sound is based. When singer Marcus "Bruni" Bruns launches into the big pop refrain in a duet with
East Frisian entertainer Annie Heger, he
makes it unmistakably clear that the listener is certainly not in for contemporary folklore on "Flügge".
Malte Hoyer, frontman of Bremen institution Versengold, also lends his voice to Wippsteert for "Is goar nich so läip". Supported by Irish folk and bluegrass elements, a melancholic but never melancholy anthem about trust and confidence emerges. A little later, when Bruni becomes an orphan in a relationship, there is a clear post-punk influence. A brass section drives the circus polka "Altobelli" forward. But when the mandolin cuts through 00s metal riffs in "Hack Bolle", Wippsteert go to the extreme. And who better to refine a rough-and-tumble piece of flat metal than Simon "Mr. Hurley" Erichsen from Osnabrück's flagship freethinkers Mr. Hurley & die Pulveraffen? Huah!
The 11 songs on "Flügge" with their staccato vocals and
dreamy folk melodies in "Herrenschokolade" through to the rock stomper "Tina fällt" are also
held together by the exclusively Low German lyrics. Typical for Wippsteert, it is the small
troubles of everyday life with all its facets that become great stories.
Plattdeutsch is alive, captivating and varied. Wippsteert are now spreading their wings
to carry this message into the world.
