The fountain of tears was created in 1973 by an Osnabrück sculptor, Walter Mellmann, and is enthroned at the intersection of Große Straße and Georgstraße in front of the Lengermann and Trieschmann department stores' in the centre of Osnabrück's pedestrian zone.
The intertwined bronze sculpture stands on three supports in the centre of a square paved area surrounded by a ring and rises to a height of around 3.5 metres.
The fountain was created following a call for tenders by the Gemeinschaft Große Straße, a group of around 50 merchants in collaboration with six artists. The jury was made up of the merchants, members of the building administration and the Association of Visual Artists.
In 1982, the fountain was damaged three times in succession by lorries in delivery traffic.
On 24 July 2024, the fountain was hit by a lorry for a fourth time. This time by an OSB lorry carrying wells directly to the service company warehouse. It was repaired in September of that year by the Osnabrück-based metal construction company Bröcker.
