Südtirol & Dolomiten – Italien – und doch nicht Italien

Italy - and yet not Italy: this is South Tyrol. Driving south from the Brenner Pass, endless apple orchards dominate the landscape, framed by monotonous rock faces. Away from the highway, however, there is a multifaceted treasure chest full of nature and culture, whose secrets are revealed to those who take the time to get to know the land and its people. South Tyrol is much more than just mountains and castles, Speck & Ski, the Three Peaks and Ortler, Waale and holy water, Wolkenstein and hiking trails!

Walter Steinberg lived in Brixen for three years and learned to love South Tyrol alongside his work as a development engineer in photographic technology. So much so that the idea of returning to the south side of the Italian Alps for a travelogue had been in his head for a long time. In 2017, he began to put this idea into practice together with his wife and dog. The three of them hiked through the Dolomites from east to west, exploring the Vinschgau Valley and South Tyrol's highest mountains. They captured the South Tyrolean way of life in the city and in the countryside and always kept a watchful eye out for gems along the way.

The photo engineer Walter Steinberg and the biologist Dr. Siglinde Fischer have been traveling together since 1999 - mostly under their own steam on foot, on snowshoes or in a kayak through the wilderness. Fifteen years ago, the two ventured into the world of travel journalism, photography and lecturing with the four-and-a-half-month, award-winning expedition "Canada - Alaska: 4,100 km by canoe from the Mackenzie to the Yukon" and fulfilled their dream of turning their passion into a career. They have never regretted this step.
