Towards the end of the 18th century, two young Germans set out to survey the world. One, Alexander von Humboldt, battled his way through jungle and steppe, navigated the Orinoco, tested poisons on himself, counted the head lice of the natives, crawled into holes in the ground and climbed volcanoes. The other, mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauss, who is too happy to stay at home and cannot spend his life without women - he also proves in his native Göttingen that space bends.
