It is not unusual for ANNA DEPENBUSCH's concerts to result in passionate scenes on stage. When the Hamburg-based singer sits alone at the piano, singing "Benjamin" about her neighbors who are having a little too much fun and throws her head back cheekily during the chorus "Ben-ja-ja-ja-ja-ja...", you can't help but think of the famous movie orgasm from the romantic comedy "Harry and Sally" and immediately have a smile on your face. In general, ANNA DEPENBUSCH's trademark is her playful and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about interpersonal relationships.
Coupled with her outrageous, meticulous musicality, each song becomes a perfect little short story and Anna an expressive storyteller. If you ask ANNA DEPENBUSCH what she is, she says: "A singer". If you ask around her, you hear: "A thoroughbred musician and multi-talent". Her audience, she enthuses, is: "funny, charming and so moving". The press has described her as "the finest chansonnière in Germany".
Songwriter, composer and producer in one, she has now also been decorated with top-class awards. In 2012, she not only received the prestigious Fred Jay Award for lyricists, but also the German Chanson Award. Doing everything herself, purely by hand, immersing herself in lyrics over a notebook, mastering every little technical detail in her own studio, juggling with audio tracks in front of the computer for days on end - all of this is important to Anna. Her great role models in this respect include Linda Perry, Björk, Tori Amos and Annette Humpe. "I admire women who courageously go their own way and don't let themselves be unsettled in a male domain. There are too few women in the music industry. Especially backstage. Such creative, independent female artists are real role models. Young female musicians should also get much more involved in the creation process of an album," she says. What exactly is her music? - Pop, chanson, singer-songwriter, singer-songwriter - Anna can't be pinned down. Genres only get in the way of the joy of music, she thinks. "I like to sit between the chairs, for the sake of variety."
